Leander Paes Has Taken to Martial Arts in order to Become Quicker

Tennis - Indian tennis doubles legend Leander Paes has been training in martial arts during the off-season in order to help him become quicker on the court and the 45-year-old veteran says he is happy with the results so far. Speaking after his loss in Pune, Paes says, “I do a lot of hard training to keep this body hard and fresh. You are seeing a much faster, younger, quicker, fresher Leander on court. I am hungry again. I am hungry to win. I want the ball on my racquet. I feel like the more court I cover, the more chances I have to win. I am 45 years old but I just love the effort and the magic that goes into playing tennis and I am sure if I keep up the the hard work like this, matches like this are going to go o go in my favour over the year. I am really happy with the off-season training I have done. I have gotten faster, stronger and I feel really good with mwith my game and I won’t be surprised if I have a really good year."

Paes is currently ranked No. 63 in the world and has won 54 ATP doubles titles in his career but he still wants more. "I have to make sure that my legs are fast and that endurance and that speed is there. My serve has got a few more clicks per hour than it had last year. The mind is clean and fresh and when the ball is travelling  through 200 miles an hour, I am on it."

Paes is playing this season with Mexican partner Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela and the duo were beaten by the Indian pairing of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan in the semi-finals of the TATA Open in Pune on Friday in a tight three-set match.
