Novak Djokovic: 'Federer and Tsitsipas played one of the best AO matches'

Following his short day at the office at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday night, Novak Djokovic is through to the semi-final of the Australian Open for the seventh time following Kei Nishikori's retirement after just 12 games. Jim Courier had a chance to ask Novak about his next opponent Lucas Pouille but also to give his thoughts about the second semi-final clash between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Heading to Melbourne with no wins at the Australian Open, the 20-year-old Greek will now play for the place in the final, becoming the youngest player in the Grand Slam semi-final since Novak at the US Open 2007.

The Serb had some great words for the youngster, praising his game and skills he has shown in the last 12 months. Also, he had to mention the fourth round clash between Tsitsipas and Roger Federer that the youngster won 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 after a titanic struggle that lasted three hours and 45 minutes, saying it was one of the best matches he ever had a chance to see in Melbourne.

"Stefanos Tsitsipas is one of the leaders of the new generation, he has played some outstanding tennis at this tournament, especially against Roger, that was one of the best-quality tennis matches that I have seen here over the years, all credits to him for playing so maturely and so well. It is never easy to play under pressure, you know, against the greatest player of all time on this court where he has won many times, so credits to Stefanos for getting into the semis. Considering how well he has been playing, I'm not surprised he is in the semis, he has been playing some terrific tennis in the last 12 months. About Nadal.. good forehand, a lot of spin, very good serve, great movement, amazing backhand, great volleys, he is just too good (laugh)."
