Pat Cash recalls conversation with Rafael Nadal after 2012 Aus Open loss

Speaking on Eurosport the 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash revealed a private conversation he had with Rafael Nadal following the Spaniard's five-hour and 53-minute loss to Novak Djokovic in the 2012 Australian Open. On Sunday they will meet each other again, and Cash, recalling his chat with the Mallorcan dated back to seven years ago, revealed: "I said congratulations and he just blurted out that once Novak gets his angles I can’t compete with that so I just played up and down the middle. Even though the angles which Rafa can get on his shots, he realised that he can’t compete with Novak in that area. But a lot has happened since of course, but that was a really interesting insight. This is really juicy stuff."

Cash added: "They have a lot of experience against each other, they’ll have their teams working overtime right now. The physical staff will be making sure the players are in the best shape possible and the tacticians will get their heads together, they’ll be getting the tapes out and having a look at the previous meetings. ‘We always talk about Rafa being a great athlete, he can run and a great ball-striker, but he is so smart. He has a Roger Federer-esque brilliance on how to create points under the toughest of circumstances", concluded Cash speaking of Rafael's game.
