Personal life influences Maria Sharapova, says tennis coach

The Russian coach Boris Sobkin believes that Maria Sharapova's off-court interests may influence the Russian player's overall performances. In an interview, as quoted by Championat, Sobkin said: 'Masha now is at a glance: her thoughts are on personal and sports life. And when a player has a lot of thoughts in her life, it does not help the game. During matches she is completely focused on the game, no matter about it. But if you look closer, tennis do not turn around the game but they stay and they have an influence.'

Sharapova defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the Australian Open before losing to Ashleigh Barty in the fourth round. On Danielle Collins defeating the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 5-7 6-1 in the quarter-finals, Sobkin added: 'She has always been one of the top 20 ranked players, so she reaching the quarter-finals is not a surprise. Saying that giving the match to Collins is not true. She started playing from the beginning of the second set. The longer the match turned, the bigger chances are to play better not the specific set but the whole match.'

After her win over Rebecca Peterson in the second round, Sharapova was asked what's her usual bedtime: "10:30. Like in bed at 10:00, sleep by 10:30. My boyfriend challenges it quite a lot, but 10:30 is my time. It's not easy to start one match at 11 a.m., then 48 hours later, a little bit more, to start one that's just before midnight. Just all those things, they're about adjustments', she concluded.
