Rafael Nadal: 'Stop calling it the Davis Cup of Pique'

In an interview to Movistar, Rafael Nadal commented on the new Davis Cup format. The Spanish player committed to the final stage of the team competition event that will take place in late November 2019. 'You have to stop calling it Davis of Pique because it does not help the competition', said Nadal referring to the FC Barcelona star Gerard Pique. 'I have a good relationship with him, when we spoke we always did it in a good way. I brought my opinion for improvements. It's the Davis Cup of ITF. You have to thank Pique and his group (Kosmos) that wants to push on our sport. All the changes are difficult. You lose things and you earn other ones. I am in favour of the change because you clearly had things that did not work. You have to try the new and you will have time to change if it failes. Being there? I hope to. My hope is being in the important tournaments and this is one of them.'

Asked if his another sportsman can be as successful as him, Nadal replied: 'In Spanish sport, yes. If I did it, others will do. In tennis, I am aware that my career is tough to equal, but I suppose that one does it and hopefully who overcomes it is Spaniard. Am I perfect? Nothing is perfect! I try to be the best possible on court and off-court, being an example for younger people', the 32-year-old concluded. He will play the Abu Dhabi exhibition event this weekend.
