Novak Djokovic fears tennis will be suspended until coronavirus pandemic ends
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic fears there won't be events played until the coronavirus pandemic ends.
On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus a pandemic.
On Sunday, the Indian Wells Masters became the first major United States sporting event to get cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
"I agree with most players but I do understand why some players think the Tour should continue," Djokovic told Republika.
Djokovic, 32, underlined in his interview that the WHO declaring a pandemic changed everything as he was "pretty sure" the Miami Masters would have to cancel the event today or tomorrow.
While in California, Djokovic used his time to watch an NBA game as he was at Staples Center for Tuesday's game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets.
"My advice to the guys that are still in the United States is to return to Europe in the next 48 hours, or even sooner," Djokovic said.
"I'm currently in Los Angeles but I will take a flight today or tomorrow. Honestly I don't know what can happen under these circumstances and I don't know if we can play Miami or any other event until the coronavirus pandemic ends."
Meanwhile, Sky Sports Italy has reported that the Miami Masters has been cancelled.
