Richard Krajicek happy with Rotterdam field despite Federer absence
The 46th edition of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament will take place in Rotterdam featuring nine top 20 players, on February 11-17th. The Tournament Director Richard Krajicek feels satisfied with the line up he has built. 'A super field', said Krajicek.
Nor Roger Federer, who won last year's title defeating Grigor Dimitrov in a straight-set final, nor Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic, but still the strongest field ever in terms of numbers at Ahoy. 'There will be so many top players and NextGenn talents. And Dutch guys, people appreciate it, this is one of our best years in terms of tickets sale, we always achieve great things in each session.'
Krajicek is happy to welcome Kei Nishikori for the first time ever. 'It's always nice to show new faces, Nishikori is in the top 10 and he won another tournament last week (in Brisbane). He might add a new fanbase. He is very popular in Asia.'
On Alexander Zverev, who lost in last year's second round against Andreas Seppi, Krajicek added: 'He needs time and confidence which comes with the age and competition, and now he is working with Ivan Lendl who managed to make Andy Murray win Grand Slams."
In 2016 Krajicek confessed he wants Rotterdam to become a Masters 1000. "I am still happy. We have ambition, we are ready with what we have. We need to constantly improve ourselves, now are a 500 and we are happy about it. We have a great tournament, which can be seen in the tickets sale.'
