Serena Williams is not afraid to challenge the umpire, says Jim Courier
In an interview to Channel Nine, the former world No. 1 Jim Courier reflected on the most difficult player he faced mentally, his compatriot John McEnroe. He also put Serena Williams in the mix speaking of mental toughness.
"John (McEnroe) is the only player I have ever played who uses his anger to fire himself up and to turn the momentum in a match', said Courier. 'He's a very strategic – I'm always a little bit worried when he starts to get fired up because I know he will play better. Most other players play worse. Serena sticks up for himself and she is her best advocate. She's not afraid to go up and challenge the chair umpire. She's a very intense person when she's on the court which is quite contrasting to how she is off the court where she is very childlike and fun and bubbly all that. She's a warrior princess when she's on the court.”
Through his official Twitter account the 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash commented on Rafael Nadal's straight-set win over Frances Tiafoe in the Australian Open quarter-finals. Cash wrote: 'Always a joy to watch Rafa in full flow. Stunning combination of power, speed, and determination. And congratulations to Tiafoe on a great tournament. Youngest American to reach QF since Andy Roddick I think. Fantastic effort. He'll learn a lot from this and come back better.'
During the match, Cash had written: 'Surgical and aggressive tennis from #Nadal. Long hard road back for #Tiafoe now. Those heavy topspin balls from #Nadal are causing some real problems for the #Tiafoe backhand. Rafa has had many years honing that particular tactic agains his great rival Roger.'
