Tennis coach explains why Rafael Nadal can go far at Australian Open
In an interview to Marca, the Roberto Bautista Agut's coach Tomas Carbonell commented on the Spaniard's success at the Qatar Open in Doha. Carbonell feels proud for the 30-year-old. 'Roberto has a personality that makes him improve every year', he said.
Carbonell is also the sports vice-president of the Spanish Tennis Federation and he welcomed Gerard Pique's arrival in the tennis world: 'For me, it's very good that he reached tennis. He has an image of an arrogant because he creates controversy but once you know him you see he is a smart guy, who knows to listen. And he likes winning, he wanted his proposal to go forward because he believes that something like the World Cup of football in tennis was needed.'
About the new Davis Cup format that will become a reality in Madrid this year, Carbonell added: 'We are excited because the change of the format is good economically.'
On Rafael Nadal's Australian Open chances - the world No. 2 is coming from a lot of injuries - Carbonell concluded: 'He struggles more and more in playing consecutive tournaments. Before he had to play a tournament prior to the major ones to do well and now he doesn't anymore, and that's good. Rafa is Rafa and who sees it in a different way is wrong. If he gets through the first three rounds Nadal is a candidate to everything in Australia.'
Bautista Agut has withdrawn from the ASB Classic in Auckland, he will play the Australian Open next.
