The paradox of Roberto Bautista Agut

Roberto Bautista Agut has improved his tennis and his results since 2014, and has emerged from the shadows of his more illustrious compatriots and is making a name for himself

Since he has been improving his solidity in the last few years, it is no coincidence that at the Australian Open 2019, he has achieved his best result in a Slam, improving his previous results.

What is surprising is the ability to manage pressure, especially in some very important matches. This ability could lead Bautista Agut to reach all his goals. These first few weeks of 2019 seem to confirm this trend, in which he won nine matches consecutively, before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were two of the nine players he had defeated in this run of his. Since Doha, he has exhibited an enviable athletic form, combined with a growing awareness of his strength. It will be very interesting to see if Bautista Agut will be able to continue this path further along in the season.

After the Australian Open, we will soon be heading back to North America for the first two Masters 1000 of the year: Indian Wells and Miami. Before that, too, there will be tournaments. It will be exciting to see what Bautista Agut will present in these events.
