Toni Nadal: 'Federer changing his strategy helped Rafael Nadal's serve'

On Rafael Nadal's new serve that is making him get great results at the Australian Open, the world No. 2's uncle Toni, speaking to Onda Cero, said: 'Before, Rafael was getting very tense when he was going to serve. He had a co-ordination issue since he is right playing lefty. My little kid always told me, "Why do you let him serve so tense?" and I told him "Do you think I like it?" but it comes a time when you just have to do it. With the changes that he made I think it went very well. Sometimes he managed to serve well in a tournament but then not having consistency. Instead, at this Australian Open the serve is much more efficient. He will not be a big server but this serve allows him to start points in a little more comfortable way."

"I was telling him 'Rafael, we do something very bad for not being able to serve well'. For two things: a technique matter in ending a shot, because he was going strict and when he goes stricter the ball does not run. The good thing for him was to run, being consistent... But as years go on you lose speed and you have to add something to your game and one of these things was to start the points well. I think Carlos Moya, who told him "You have to serve stronger" helped. Federer changing his strategy helped too. As years went on he played a more aggressive tennis. Before, Federer was returning placing the ball on court and from 2017 he started returning very aggressive and it still made him better.'
