Tsitsipas was always in control mentally against Roger Federer - Whitaker

Tennis analyst Catherine Whitaker praised Stefanos Tsitsipas's win over Roger Federer in the Australian Open fourth round. Speaking on The Tennis Podcast with David Law, Whitaker said she was impressed by Tsitsipas making a difference in the key moments against such a legend like the 20-time Major winner. "I’ve never seen such an extraordinary ability to rise to the occasion and to play the big points well," Whitaker said. "The average service game length at the end of the first set over the first two sets was five minutes to Tsitsipas and one minute 15 seconds for Federer. I know he plays quickly on his own serve but that’s an extraordinary discrepancy and tells you everything about the relative ease in which they were holding serve. Federer was dominating both sets, absolute constant pressure and most people feel like ‘I’m going to give way eventually, I’m just hanging on and hanging on’ but he mentally looked to me like he was always in control despite the scoreboard.

“In matches like that where it’s a potential changing of the guard match, Tsitsipas in press conference seemed pretty confident in it being pitched as that You’re waiting for the younger guy to crack and in this I wasn’t even waiting for it, I could see from the word go that that’s not what this guy does. He can handle it.”
