WTA Hua Hin: Garbine Muguruza and Dayana Yastremska reach quarters

The top seed Garbine Muguruza is through to the quarter-final in Hua Hin following a 6-3, 7-5 win over Mona Barthel in an hour and 18 minutes. Garbine and Mona have played for the first time in almost six years and the Spaniard scored a straight sets win despite losing more than 40% of the points in her games, suffering three breaks from four chances she offered to the German. On the other hand, Mona served at only 45% and that was a recipe for disaster, hitting ten double faults and getting broken six times to end her run in the second round. They traded breaks at the start of the match and Muguruza secured another one in game five when Barthel sprayed a backhand error.

Mona hit three double faults in game nine to suffer another break, hading the opener to her rival before racing into a 4-0 lead in set number two. Garbine started to fight back, pulling one break in game six after another double fault from the German and leveling the score at 4-4 after, you guess, another double fault from Mona. Returning at 6-5, Muguruza forced an error from Barthel for her third break of the set and the place in the last eight. An 18-year-old Dayana Yastremska will compete in the sixth WTA quarter-final after a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Shuai Peng in just 73 minutes.

The youngster fends off all four break points she faced in the opening set to keep the pressure on her rival all the time, dominating in the first set and bringing the match home with a late break in set number two for the place in the last eight. Dayana found her range right from the start, toppling the more experienced rival in the most critical points to open a 5-0 lead, clinching the opening set with a good hold in game seven. Peng bounced back in set number two, staying in touch with Yastremska with eight commanding holds on both sides before facing an ultimate challenge while serving at 4-4.

She managed to save four break points before Dayana converted the fifth to move in front, sealing the deal with another great service game a few minutes later to stay on the title course. The 4th seed Saisai Zheng defeated Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2, 6-4 in 90 minutes, losing serve four times but delivering a masterclass performance on the return to earn seven breaks from 12 opportunities. Begu led 4-2 in the second set before losing four straight games to propel the Chinese over the top, unable to keep the advantage and at least prolong the set.
