ATP Cordoba - DRAW: Fabio Fognini and Marco Cecchinato lead charge
The inaugural Cordoba Open will take place between February 4-10, 2019, replacing the canceled ATP 250 event in Quito that had to go down due to lack of financial support. Thus, the Lawn Tenis Club Cordoba will host the first ATP tournament on clay in 2019 and it will be an excellent chance for those who like to compete on the slowest surface to chase the first title of the season and a deep run following the first Grand Slam of the season in Melbourne. Fabio Fognini is the top seed (Dominic Thiem decided to withdraw), seeking his eighth ATP title on clay and opening the campaign against Aljaz Bedene or Maximilian Marterer.
Pablo Cuevas, Malek Jaziri and the veteran Carlos Berlocq are in the top quarter as well and Fognini is the favorite to reach the semis from there, skipping Davis Cup tie in India to get ready for this event. The home star Diego Schwartzman is the 3rd seed, facing the promising Brazilian youngster Thiago Seyboth Wild, Christian Garin, Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Pedro Sousa and Guido Pella en route to the last four. Nicolas Jarry played Davis Cup in Austria on Friday and Saturday and he will make a long trip to Cordoba, standing as the 5th seed and kicking off the tournament against Juan Ignacio Londero who received a wild card.
Pablo Andujar, Lorenzo Sonego, Cameron Norrie and Pablo Carreno Busta are there as well and it should be interesting to see Norrie against Carreno Busta in the second round, with the Briton who improved his game big time. The crowd will have a chance to see the clash between Leonardo Mayer and Federico Delbonis in the opening round, with Roberto Carballes Baena, Jaume Munar, Guido Andreozzi and the 2nd seed Marco Cecchinato all looking to reach the semis from the bottom quarter.
