Being world No. 1 will be almost impossible, says Roger Federer
In an interview to RTS, Roger Federer reiterated that becoming world No. 1 again will be "almost impossible". The Swiss dropped down to the sixth place on the rankings following some disappointing results that came after huge wins. "I am older, I play fewer tournaments. I'd rather be ranked lower ranked and achieve great results. I hope it happens this year", said Federer.
He also praised the Next Generation: "Younger players try to breakthrough, they can run crazy and very dangerous risks. And I try to stay young on my mind."
Federer commented on his decision to play the French Open again for the first time since 2015. The Swiss player said several times that he does not know how many and which clay-court tournaments he will compete in, but one thing is sure: he will play in Paris. "I hope not to feel pressure. French fans love tennis. My win in 2009 was one of my biggest in career", said Federer, who achieved the Career Grand Slam that year by defeating Robin Soderling in a straight-set final.
Asked if he feels he can win the title again at the French Open, Federer replied: "Mmh... I‘d say yes, but, I need luck, a good draw and a good start and I need exploits at the right time. Well, I wouldn’t say I play it for fun but maybe a bit more with a wait and see what happens."
Federer is in Switzerland enjoying the winter holidays. But he does not want to ski in order not to get injured. "My daughters constantly tell me 'go skiing'. I answer them once again that I am afraid I can hurt. Then it will be the contrary, I will ask them to ski and they will say 'Oh no, again'."
