Caroline Wozniacki withdraws from Doha due to a viral illness

The last year's Australian Open champion and a former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki has pulled out from Premier event in Doha due to a viral illness. The world no. 10 was supposed to play on Tuesday against a qualifier Karolina Muchova and a lucky loser Samantha Stosur replaced her in the draw. This came after Ashleigh Barty and Caroline Garcia also announced their withdrawals, leaving Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova as top seeds. Wozniacki was the semi-finalist in Doha last year and she will drop out from the top-10 on Monday for the first time since June 2017 after losing 350 points.

After making a debut in 2008, Caroline was the beaten finalist in Doha in 2011 and 2017 and she will have to wait for another year to chase her maiden Qatar Total Open crown. Unlike in 2018, the 28-year-old Dane has not enjoyed the best start of the year so far, competing at just five matches and failing to reach the quarter-final at the first two events she played. The young Canadian toppled Wozniacki in the second round of Auckland before losing to Maria Sharapova in the third round of the Australian Open to lose the title and a massive amount of points. Caroline should be back on the court next week in Dubai.

"I'm sick, it's a short story," Wozniacki said. "Just not feeling well after I had a fever. Gonna go back to bed and rest up. It's definitely frustrating. I have been here for quite a few days practicing and just trying my best to be prepared and ready to go today. I already felt it last night, but I woke up today and didn't feel well at all. Sometimes you have to make those decisions and just need to rest up."
