Edberg: 'Tennis has a future after Roger Federer, Djokovic, Nadal retire'
Stefan Edberg believes that tennis has a future once the top guys retire. In an interview to RPT, the six-time Major winner commented on how it will feel when Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will not play anymore. 'Their dominant position has been big. It will take time so that a new generation can go forward. But tennis is strong enough to cope with this change', said Edberg.
ATP is trying new rules to add entertainment to the game: 'They should experiment, but they shouldn't forget the essence of the game. I understand the motivation, the public wants quick results. But tennis lives of its tradition too. And you should be careful when you act.'
Edberg's historical rival Boris Becker became the head of men's German tennis. Sweden has no top 100 players, couldn't they benefit from having Edberg? 'It has a lot to do with lack of financial resources that Sweden is currently going through. But I would be no one to bring changes to the federation. This is too much of a politics for me. I follow what Boris does (laughter). He bothered me a lot. He was crazy on the court. But I admired him, he made me improve.'
On the men's German tennis, Edberg added: 'There are some really good players currently on Tour with very big potential. It's difficult to say who will play in the tennis world. Zverev leads the whole system.'
