Frances Tiafoe: I always dreamed of facing Roger Federer
In an interview to Weekly Standard, Frances Tiafoe recalled when he faced Roger Federer in the first round of the 2017 US Open. The American lost a tight five-set match, Federer didn't play his best tennis due to a back injury and Tiafoe enjoyed the experience. “I always dreamed of being on center court, playing the best in the world. In finally happened so I was ready for it," said Tiafoe.
Tiafoe also commented on his progress. Earlier this year, he lost to Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open quarter-finals. He had never gone so far in a Grand Slam. “I still have a long way to go, but I said, ‘Look, I’m going to change everybody’s life'. I’m going to buy you all a house, I’m going to do X, Y, Z, and everybody is going to live nice and at the end of my career no one is going to have to worry about anything.’ As far as myself, I want to see myself hold a Grand Slam, be at the top of the game. That’s what everyone wants.”
Analyzing his loss to Jason Jung in the New York Open opening round, Tiafoe added: "I'm not really gonna lose confidence from this at all. Obviously, it was a last-minute thing, trying to play. I clearly wasn't ready. I'm just gonna go to Delray next week and try to have a good week. It's still early in the year, and I've had success already, so I'm totally still fine. And I'm working hard, so it's not like it's the end of the world. I'm excited for it. It should be fun. I can't wait to get back out there."
