Magnus Norman reveals the only question mark around Stan Wawrinka
In an interview to NZZ, Magnus Norman commented on Stan Wawrinka's return to the top. Last week, the Swiss reached the Rotterdam Open final losing to Gael Monfils. Norman is pleased with the Lausanne native's improvements: "On any given day, he can still beat anybody. The question is, if he will manage to play well for more than 11 months, so that he can get back to the top. I am sure he will do it."
Norman added: "It's always about having confidence in yourself. But for him getting the old physical shape is even more important. Having a longer off-season last year helped him. Stan had more time for everything: he went on holidays before and then he started preparing himself earlier for the season. He was not able to prepare so early in the past. In the last few years, he played the ATP Finals and once he competed in the Davis Cup final too. All this affected (his) recovery and preparation. From time to time, every player is having longer breaks. Stan is now very close to the level he had prior to his injury."
Wawrinka will turn 34 next month but he is not thinking about retiring. "We never speak about the age," assured Norman. "Stan lost almost a year (because of) his surgery. For me he is still on a comeback. He is motivated, he behaves in a professional way both on and off the court. I do not see signs that he may soon have enough of tennis.
"He knows he is getting older and so he needs to be smarter with his career, but especially with his body. Among other things, we fixed the training with his fitness trainer Pierre Paganini. The intense sessions are shorter. Stan works on his explosiveness."
