Naomi Osaka can be like Maria Sharapova and win French Open - Jim Courier

The former world no. 1 Jim Courier believes that Naomi Osaka can get far at the French Open as well. The Japanese player recently confessed that she does not love playing on clay, but Courier pointed out some examples to explain why Osaka could do well and potentially win her third consecutive Grand Slam title. “Can she play on the clay? It will be not her best surface, but we’ve seen players like Maria Sharapova who weren’t necessarily natural on the clay go to Roland Garros (the French Open) and find a way through it and win," said Courier on Channel Nine.

Osaka seems to handle pressure easily, despite all the expectations around her. About this aspect, Courier added: “This is her version of enjoying the moment. This is how, at his point in her life, she processes success. I agree with Sam (Smith) that there is the mix of cultures in her. I think that you can see it – she’s unclear. There’s certainly a lot of reserve in there, but in her game style, you certainly see she has plenty of aggression to go as well. But this is her. This is who she is. It’s wonderful. She’s an absolute star and this is going to open up the game even (with) even broader appeal in Japan that it has been from Kei Nishikori’s success, too. A lot of great things are going to come from Naomi and her success and I think that success is going to continue to grow, too."
