Naomi Osaka splits with coach Sascha Bajin
Naomi Osaka announced a quite surprising news through her official Twitter account on Monday. The Japanese player said she split with her coach Sascha Bajin with who she had started working after the 2017 season. Results were immediately good as she had a great 2018 winning her maiden career-title at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and maiden Grand Slam at the US Open, and then she started the 2019 on a stellar note as well by triumphing at the Australian Open. "Hey everyone, I will no longer be working together with Sascha. I thank him for his work and wish him all the best in the future", wrote Osaka.
This is definitely an unexpected choice by the world No. 1 who withdrew from the Qatar Open in Doha due to a back injury and she hopes to be back competing at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship next week. Bajin worked as Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki's hitting partner in the past and he split with them because he wanted to become a coach. He started this new experience in a great way but without a doubt no one could have planned that this split would happen.
Bajin tweeted: "Thank you Naomi. I wish you nothing but the best as well. What a ride that was. Thank you for letting me be part of this."
In press conference at the Australian Open before the final against Petra Kvitova, Bajin had spoken about how their co-operation had started: 'From the very beginning, she was a big hitter. I didn't have to teach her how to hit the ball or anything. Maybe it was a little bit more like telling her there are other things out there than just hitting very hard. We worked on her angles. We worked on just a little bit more of everything. Slicing, you know. Kind of like wanted her to come in a little bit more. Just a little bit of everything.'
