Roger Federer can't win the French Open, says Mats Wilander

Mats Wilander believes that Roger Federer will not be among the favorites to win the French Open in June. The Swiss player will play the tournament for the first time since 2015, and in an interview to Express, Wilander, a seven-time Grand Slam winner said: “Roger can win the three but he can’t win the French. If he gets lucky with the draw, lucky with the conditions. That’s the way he always had to deal with it. But one of three he is going to have it.”

Wilander also criticized the tournaments' choice to change the speed surface often: “It’s difficult to tell because every tournament changes the surface every year. This year the Australian Open wasn’t quite as fast and the ball changed. They played a lot slower than last year so that made a big difference. It was cold the night Federer lost so the ball was really slow because cold temperatures make rubber tennis balls move slower through the air. There are so many things that have to be right to win a major."

Wilander suggested that playing on clay may help Federer when the grass season comes: “Maybe he wants to play for good match practice that he might of suffered last Wimbledon and the rest of the summer. He hadn’t played competitive matches for abut three months after the American hard-court swing of Indian Wells and Miami. I love it that he is playing. I can’t believe he missed two years When Nadal didn’t play Wimbledon we missed him."
