Rosset plays down expectations on Tsitsipas: 'Federer made 40 FH errors'

In a column for Le Temps, the former world No. 9 singles player Marc Rosset commented on who can take over Novak Djokovic. Rosset indicated the younger players, but he admitted that they still need to improve. "The guys who make Djokovic struggle are the big servers who are able to hit the ball flat, like Stan Wawrinka sometimes", said Rosset. "The two finals he lost in Paris and ATP Finals, is against this kind of players, Khachanov in Paris and Zverev in London. It's interesting for the future because these gamestyles can stop his dominance. But the question is: when? When the saw the semifinals, where Nadal and Djokovic dominated the two younger guys, we say that the newcomers are still very, very far away.

There is obviously Stefanos Tsitsipas coming up, but the tournament's newcomer did not confirm his win over Federer. He had a lot of problems against Bautista Agut, and then he was dominated by Nadal. And we have to remember that he had to play the match of the life to defeat a Federer who makes 40 forehand unforced errors and wastes 12 break points. Tsitsipas improved a lot over a year, but there is still a long way to go for him. This is the player who fascinates me the most.'

Rosset also spoke about the GOAT predictions based on how many Majors players will hold when they retire: "Everyone is doing his own predictions. What bothers me is the conclusions we draw: who is the best? The tennis is often a history of game styles that either adapt or not. Nadal's game doesn't suit Federer, Federer's game does not suit to Djokovic, Djokovic's game is not ideal for Nadal. If we consider the last year, who are the players who made more signs of progress? Nadal and Djokovic.'
