Serena Williams and Federer's selfie is just the latest iconic tennis image
Roger Federer and Serena Williams competed for the first time on a tennis court at the Hopman Cup 2019. A historical event, highly anticipated by fans and celebrated at the end of the match (Federer and Belinda Bencic defeated Serena and Frances Tiafoe in three sets) with a selfie that has been around the world. This is only the last image that will remain forever in the collective imagination because it could be unique in its kind. An event that has happened once and which perhaps will not happen again in the future. But during the history of tennis, there have been many images that have written important and indelible pages, which fans of old and new date will not forget.
William Renshaw challenges Lawford, at the Wimbledon tournament of 1880. This is not a picture, but a drawing, but remained indelible over time. A memory that should never be lost.
The four French musketeers. Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet, René Lacoste and Jean Borotra. A photo of 1927 which however made history and the fortune of what is unanimously considered to be the strongest Davis Cup team in history.
Suzanne Lenglen. In one of the most famous women's tennis shots. La Divine performed in a volley.
Rod Laver and his backhand. Of all the images of Laver that have come down to us, that of his backhand is surely the most representative.
Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Another iconic image. The epic and entertaining match between the North American champion and Bobby Riggs, in 1973. In the second challenge, King defeated her rival in three sets.
Bjorn Borg wins Wimbledon 1980. Can we say that this is the most iconic image of tennis history? Maybe yes. Borg's exultation after the victory in 1980 against McEnroe became legendary.
Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon. Extravagant looks and eyeglasses. Martina Navratilova in a picture that has made history.
Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. Their rivalry was epic. Showy looks and in the background the flag of the USA, in one of the most amusing and suggestive images of the recent history.
Federer and Nadal play the double together. The two biggest rivals in the history of modern tennis played their first historical double match together in the Europe team at the Laver Cup 2017.
The selfie between Roger Federer and Serena Williams. We close with this image, destined to enter the collective imaginary in the years to come, as one of the most anticipated meetings in the history of tennis.
