Two big names join Rafael Nadal's Eisenhower Cup at Indian Wells
Two days before the start of the 2019 BNP Paribas Open, the three-time Indian Wells champion Rafael Nadal will host the first edition of the $150,000 winner-take-all Eisenhower Cup on Tuesday, March 5! “Rafa & Friends” is a one-night Tie Break Tens event that will gather the 17-time Grand Slam champion together with special guests, Milos Raonic, Gael Monfils and Dominic Thiem, along with former Grand Slam champions Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka who have been announced a few days later. A thrilling night at one of the best-organized tennis tournaments in the world will take place on Stadium 2 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Tie Break Tens format that contains first to ten-point tie break matches.
Players will be divided into two groups with round-robin play, with the culmination in the final clash between the group winners, giving the fans the opportunity to watch seven entertaining encounters from 7:00 p.m. The world no. 10 Marin Cilic made a debut at Indian Wells 11 years ago but he never managed to deliver his best tennis in the desert, reaching only one quarter-final in 2016 when he lost to David Goffin. Twelve months ago, Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated him in the third round and the Croat will seek a much better run in two weeks, competing at only one tournament so far in 2019.
The three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka is working on his way back following a nasty knee injury, missing Indian Wells in 2018 after playing in the final a year earlier, losing to Roger Federer in straight sets.
