Roger Federer may be influenced mentally heading into US Open, says Roddick
The 2003 US Open winner Andy Roddick commented on Roger Federer's chances to win the upcoming tournament. The American said: "I don’t think the lack of matchplay is as much of a concern just as much as the mental hangover from a match like Wimbledon. In 2016 he missed the last six months of the year, came back and his first pro tournament after being off with no matches going in was the Australian Open, which he won so, you know, it’s just a very Roger like way of doing things. My concern would be over the mental side of getting over a loss like that as opposed to the lack of matches from Roger."
On Serena Williams coming back to the US Open after arguing with the chair umpire Carlos Ramos in last year's final, Roddick added: "Yeah, I mean I think you think about it a little bit, but what hasn’t she been through in her career so far? You know, I think it will be telling just to see the way the crowd reacts at first but listen no matter how good you are at what you do and no matter how many times you’ve done it, you can still learn something. I guarantee you she would have a significant list of takeaways from last year’s final but listen, like everything, it’s a chance at redemption. I know she loves that New York crowd so she’s certainly on the list of favourites still."
