What happened with Rafael Nadal in 2018 Acapulco was normal - Zurutuza

The Mexican Open Tournament Director Raul Zurutuza looks forward to welcoming some of the best players in Acapulco. Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev and Kevin Anderson headline the men's field. "I think for Mexican tennis, for our country, it's an event that gets stronger more and more. With all this, the tournament gets bigger because there are many younger guys between 18 and 24 years and you have veterans like Rafael Nadal and John Isner. Having these big stars and keeping a good message abroad, we see more than 80 or 90 countries and this is important for Mexican tennis," Zurutuza told Marca.

On David Ferrer getting a wild card invitation, Zurutuza added: "With David Ferrer we have a great relationship and the truth is that he made a call which for us was a nice surprise, he told us by text 'Hi, can you give me a wild card because I want to play my last International Tournament in Acapulco.' I think David will leave like a big champion."

On Sloane Stephens headlining the women's draw, Zurutuza added: "I would like Sloane Stephens to win again because when she did it two years ago it left a good impression, and she is a very good girl."

Zurutuza also hopes to welcome the defending champion, Juan Martin del Potro, back to the event: "I hope his doctors recommend him to go to Acapulco, he is a man that earned the people's support, it took a lot of work to come off from the knee injury, but hopefully he can come. If for some reason he cannot come we will understand it and we hope to have del Potro for 2020."

On Nadal, Zurutuza concluded: "What happened last year is normal, and this year he comes well and the crown can be calm."
