WTA St. Petersburg: Kiki Bertens tops Donna Vekic to claim the title

Competing in her tenth WTA final, the 2nd seed Kiki Bertens claimed the eighth crown after a 7-6, 6-4 win over Donna Vekic in an hour and 43 minutes. Bertens scored the second win over Vekic in five matches, delivering better numbers behind the first serve and prevailing in the crucial points to seal the deal in straight sets. They converted seven out of nine break points and it was Kiki who grabbed four breaks, overcoming a 5-2 deficit in the first set to gain the momentum before the rest of the encounter. Donna scored a break in the very first game of the match and she opened a 5-2 lead with a return winner in game seven that pushed her closer to the finish line.

Out of sudden, Kiki won 16 of the next 17 points, pulling one break back in the following game when she fired a forehand winner and the result was leveled at 5-5 after a loose forehand drive-volley from Vekic in game ten, suffering the second straight break at love and sending the momentum to the other side of the net. Bertens won the tie break 7-2 after a service winner, mighty relieved she escaped from a huge deficit. Donna gave the serve away after a double fault in the third game of the second set before pulling it back after a forehand winner in game six that kept her on the positive side of the scoreboard.

Her efforts were in vain, though, hitting a double fault in game nine to suffer a crucial break before Bertens converted the fourth match point in the following game thanks to a lucky net cord to wrap up the triumph and celebrate another big title after Cinncinati last summer when she defeated Simona Halep in three sets.

Final result:

[2]Kiki Bertens (NED) vs [8]Donna Vekic (CRO) 7-6(2) 6-4
