ATP Miami: Stefanos Tsitsipas, David Goffin and Frances Tiafoe reach R4
The world no. 10 and 8th seed in Miami Stefanos Tsitsipas is through to the fourth round in Miami after a 6-4, 6-4 win over Leonardo Mayer in an hour and 34 minutes, scoring the 17th victory so far in 2019. The young Greek never faced a break point, finishing the match with 20 winners and 13 unforced errors while Mayer counted to 19 winners and 25 mistakes, facing 11 break points and getting broken once in each ser to push Stefanos into the last 16. It was a rock-solid start for a newly-promoted top-10 star, sailing through his service games and keeping the pressure on the Argentinian whom he broke in game three after forcing an error.
In the next two service games, Leonardo had to defend six more break chances, never finding the rhythm but managing to avoid the second break and stay close to Stefanos. Serving at 5-4, Tsitsipas fired a service winner to complete the opener after 40 minutes, hoping for more of the same in the rest of the encounter. Leonardo stayed in touch in the first eight games of the second set, losing focus in game nine to spray a forehand error on the third break point he gave to Tsitsipas, falling 5-4 behind and allowing the youngster to advance after hold in game ten, setting a thrilling clash against Denis Shapovalov.
After he suffered a terrible loss in Phoenix Challenger right after an early exit at Indian Wells, David Goffin has scored a much-needed win in Miami, entering the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Marco Cecchinato in 69 minutes. The Belgian got broken twice although his progress was never in danger since he won almost half of the return points, creating six break chances and securing four breaks for a swift win. David forged the most significant advantage in the shortest points up to four strokes, hitting more service winners and taming his groundstrokes nicely to remain in contention.
Cecchinato had to chase the result from early stages, sending a forehand long in game three to hand the break to his rival who secured another break in game seven for a 5-2 lead. Marco pulled one break back in the next game but that was all he could do, with Goffin closing the opener after a hold at love in game ten for a 6-4. A double break in games five and seven sent the Belgian 5-2 in front in set number two and he sealed the deal with a backhand down the line winner at 5-4 to reach the next round in style.
Competing in Miami for the 17th straight year, the Spanish veteran David Ferrer has played the 545th and the last ATP match on hard courts, losing to Frances Tiafoe 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 25 minutes. The young American has not been in a great form after reaching the quarter-final at the Australian Open but he played well in this one after the opening set, losing 14 points on serve in sets two and three, never facing a break point and mounting the pressure on the veteran who defeated Alexander Zverev in the previous round.
