Djokovic's real season will start in Monte Carlo
The defeat suffered in Indian Wells against Philipp Kohlschreiber, the season's second should not be worrying for Novak Djokovic. The Serb, champion at the Australian Open, is disposing of the start of a season that saw him win the Australian Open, despite the defeat against Roberto Bautista in the semi-final in Doha.
Djokovic could complete the non-calendar Grand Slam for the second time in his career at the French Open, and he is about to start the clay swing as a leading protagonist. Starting with the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters. Before that, there is the Miami Open, the second Masters 1000 of the season. In Indian Wells, he had to dispose of the hard work to win the Australian Open and had to deal with the fall-out of the voting out of Chris Kermode at the ATP President and CEO at the end of his 2019 term.
The Kermode-issue saw Djokovic, president of the Council, at the center of the controversy. His faction won; Kermode is no longer the chairman of the ATP, but the Serb and other tennis players have to face an internal situation that sees them facing the likes of former ATP council members, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal who backed Kermode publicly.
The real season of the Serb will start with the clay season, where his only rival will be Nadal. If all goes well for him, he could come closer to equaling Nadal and Federer's Slams' records.
Despite his loss in Indian Wells, Djokovic is still going mentally strong and this could prove deadly for his opponents. Will Djokovic extend his Australian Open form for the rest of the year, beginning in Miami, before heading on to clay? We will soon find out.
