Fabio Fognini set for Estoril Open debut

Italian tennis star Fabio Fognini has been added to the Millennium Estoril Open player field, the tournament announced on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old is set to make his debut at the Portuguese ATP 250 clay-court event as he has no previous appearances at the tournament.

Fognini, a clay-court specialist, hasn't had many success on his favorite surface so far this season.

Surprisingly, the Italian performed disappointingly bad during the Golden Swing.

The 31-year-old, who was one of the main favorites to win titles during the Golden Swing, picked up zero wins and three losses during his Golden Swing campaign.

World No. 17 Fognini had a first-round bye at the Cordoba Open and Argentina Open, before he lost his openers at those two respective events.

The Italian concluded his Golden Swing campaign with losing in the Rio Open first round to eventual runner-up Felix Auger-Aliassime.

However, Fognini will certainly be motivated to perform better on clay during the upcoming European swing as he will be hoping to have a good preparation for the French Open.

Fognini is the sixth confirmed player for Estoril as 2018 Wimbledon runner-up Kevin Anderson, this year's Australian Open semi-finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, former world No. 6 Gael Monfils, defending champion Joao Sousa and rising Australian star Alex de Minaur have also signed up to play at the tournament.

The Millennium Estoril Open is due to take place from April 29 - May 05.
