Indian Wells Final: Angelique Kerber vs Andreescu, a generational battle
The women's singles final at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the first Premier Mandatory event of the year, will have an unprecedented epilogue: Angelique Kerber will challenge the millennial Bianca Andreescu. This is not just an unprecedented final, but a new challenge as this is the first meeting between these two players.
Kerber's experience will challenge Andreescu's boldness. The young 18-year-old Canadian is a further confirmation of how, in 2019, the young WTA Next Gen players are taking impressively qualitative strides.
Kerber comes into this challenge as a favorite. Her tennis is very well expressed on hard courts and the German's experience could be the winning weapon in a challenge where mental strength and energy reserves will play a fundamental role. Andreescu will have to play in a carefree manner but at the same time, will have to show solidity and maturity.
On her way to the final, Kerber defeated Yulia Putinsteva, Aryna Sabalenka, Venus Williams and Belinda Bencic. Andreescu defeated Irina Begu, Dominika Cibulkova, Qiang Wang, Garbine Muguruza and Elina Svitolina, all top-level opponents.
It will be a very interesting final, where the defensive wall erected by Kerber and her tennis from the baseline will try to embarrass her opponent's game. Andreescu will try to play aggressively, pushing with both the forehand and the backhand. She is the first Canadian player to play a final in Indian Wells, while if Kerber should win, she will become the world no. 2.
The German has won 12 career titles in 28 finals, including the Australian Open 2016, the US Open 2016 and Wimbledon 2018. Andreescu won the WTA 125s of Newport Beach in January and she played and lost her first WTA final at beginning of the year in Auckland, against Julia Goerges. This is the fifth tournament of the year played by Kerber and this is her first final of 2019.
