Janko Tipsarevic, 34, motivated to have successful comeback to tennis
Former world No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic is motivated to make a successful comeback to tennis as, despite being 34 years old and having a long history of injuries, he didn't want to call it a career last year.
On Wednesday, the Serb clinched his first ATP win since the 2017 US Open as he handed a straight-set defeat to American Bradley Klahn 6-3 6-3 in the Miami Masters first round.
World No. 453 Tipsarevic broke the American in the third game and then managed to hold on to his serve to win the first set despite facing a total of five break points throughout the set.
Klahn broke back Tipsarevic in the third game of the second set to reduce the deficit to 2-1 but the Serb broke the American in the following game to take a 3-1 lead and then held on to his serve to claim the win.
Four-time ATP champion Tipsarevic missed the entire 2018 season as he underwent surgeries on both hamstring tendons but returned to action at the beginning of this season.
The Serb, who entered Miami by using a protected ranking, plays next against No. 22 seed Roberto Bautista Agut.
"Sometimes the most beautiful destinations are from the bumpiest of roads," Tipsarevic wrote on Instagram.
"It certainly has been a bumpy road for my team and I to get to this point. But today it makes it all worth it – this feeling is incredible. This time 12 months ago I was wondering whether I would ever be able to run again, let alone be here playing at the Miami Open.
"Looking forward to the next round here in Miami. We are just getting started!"
