Mariana Duque Announces Her Decision to Retire from Professional Tennis

Tennis - Colombian Mariana Duque has announced her decision to retire from professional tennis after a 15-year-long career. Duque's last tournament will be the Claro Open Colsánitas, which will take place from April 6th to April 14th.

The 29-year-old Duque reached the third round of the Roland Garros in 2017, which was her best performance in a Grand Slam tournament. She also won several medals for Colombia at the Pan American Games - she won two silver medals at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio, a bronze at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara and won the first gold medal for Colombia in women 's tennis at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

Colsanitas CEO Ignacio Correa, the company that sponsored the player, said in a statement, "(Mariana) feels exhausted from everything that surrounds the life of an athlete, and she told us that she will focus on personal projects. We already told her that we offered her the possibility of being in a course for her professional training and we hope what the final decision will be for her."

Correa said that Duque will play the Claro Open in April and will be given a farewell either after her match or via a press conference.

Duque won the Bogota Open title in 2010, beating Germany's Angelique Kerber and also reached the finals of the Nuremberg Open in 2016 where she was beaten by Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens. Her career-high singles ranking was world No. 66, achieved in October 2015 while her best ranking in doubles was No. 96 achieved in June 2018.
