Novak Djokovic: 'A part of me has always believed in my abilities'

Speaking to Laureus, Novak Djokovic commented on the difficult time he went through as he was dealing with an elbow injury. "It was a very special, transformative journey for me", admitted the world No. 1. "I struggled with a major injury for a couple of years and I got to a point where I had to undergo surgery. A part of me has always believed in myself, in my own qualities and abilities to rise but at the same time was highly unlikely that I will be standing here 12 months later. It made my journey even more special and it taught me great lessons and great deal about myself. I had to really dig deep and just understand, and use that as an opportunity to grow and to really change into a better version of myself."
Djokovic added: "It's one of these very important lessons that sports can teach, that failure is an incredible opportunity to grow and to rise above yourself, it's not a bad thing. And that's something if we can manage to learn a little bit, it has so much power in our lives and it is one of the greatest things in sports. Nelson Mandela said that the sport beautifully speaks a universal language, it has the power to change a life, world and life of many, many people especially young people and Laureus Foundation does exactly that. They tackle those disadvantaged areas the young people that struggle in life to find the purpose, a meaning. They give back mainly through sports and that's why I think so many people around the world relate to sports, sports heroes because they can identify themselves and the struggles they go through."
