People place Dominic Thiem just behind Rafael Nadal on clay - Coach
In an interview to L'Equipe, Nicolas Massu commented on Dominic Thiem's success. The Austrian just won his maiden Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells. Asked if winning the French Open becomes a goal, Massu replied: "If he continues like that he will have the opportunity to achieve great things. Of course, the next step is to win a grand slam. People are placing him just behind Rafael Nadal when they think of clay. He already made the semifinals twice and one final."
Asked what he changed to win the best title in his career, Massu replied: "I am not going to change something in three weeks. I can only have an impact on the details. Domi can play great on hard but sometimes he stays far back even if he makes the difference with his shots."
Massu concluded: "You know he lost on clay in Rio on Tuesday and the day after he was practising on a hard court in unbearable heat. We worked morning and afternoon despite the extreme conditions and despite he was not feeling very well. We had a great practice. It was like a mini pre-season. It’s unbelievable, it’s less than a month but what an intensity. His team welcomed me very well and I am proud to work with a Top five because now he is number four."
We will see how far Thiem will go in Miami, which is an important event for him also to show his consistency.
