Reaching Major finals is not enough for Serena Williams, says coach
In an interview to Nice Matin, Serena Williams's coach Patrick Mouratoglou commented on how the French men's tennis is doing. The country's players have not been achieving consistent and very good results lately which raised some criticism from Mouratoglou as well. But he is confident. "We are going through a time that is not too much favourable, but the National head director is really busy and made some important changes. At the moment there are three young guys who play very well like Ugo Humbert who showed all his potential in Marseille (reached the semifinals), Lucas Pouille who plays very well and the young Corentin Moutet who is set to soon crack the top 100. I think we will benefit from it in the next few years, we should be a little patient", said Mouratoglou.
On Serena, the Frenchman added: "There was a one-year and a half break due to the motherhood but Serena had a good year in 2018 when we knew she would get back after a long absence. She just reached two Grand Slam finals but for her, that's not enough (laughter). We are running behind that 24th Major! She is used to facing challenges, this is what motivates us every day, otherwise, she would have probably left the courts."
After her win over Victoria Azarenka, Serena said: "She's a very good friend. I would say we're pretty close. We're both moms, and we know how hard it is and how hard it's been for us to come back, you know, and starting literally from scratch and fighting our way back."
