Roger Federer: 'Facing Kyle Edmund for the first time is tricky'

Roger Federer feels excited to face Kyle Edmund in the Indian Wells fourth round. They never played each other on the tour, which makes it a little bit intriguing, although they often trainer together, including the most recent time at the Australian Open. "That's tricky, he has established already so he is a really good player", said Federer following his straight-set win over Stan Wawrinka. "I think he's a really nice guy. Trains hard. He's got good balance. Very similar backhand to [Andy] Murray in some ways, also, by the technique of it. And the forehand really goes. He's got some major power there. He can also serve big in the first serve. Kyle has a great forehand, unbelievable power, great mover, good balance and he has just won the Challenger here this week so he has played a bunch of matches more than anybody else in this event so it's a good advantage for him. He also came through very convincing in the last couple of matches so he is having a great week. We had a great week with him in Chicago at the Laver Cup and I could see what he had as a person but also as a player and I was highly impressed."

On Stan Wawrinka's attempt to comeback to his highest level, Federer added: "I think he's right there. I think maybe all he's maybe missing is match play, a higher ranking, so he can get some better seeding [and] he doesn't have to face the toughest guy early on in tournaments."
