Serena Williams withdraws from Miami Open due to injury
Serena Williams's terrible March month continues. The American player has been forced to withdraw from the Miami Open due to a left knee injury. It was the American player herself to announce the news through a press release on Saturday. "It was an amazing experience to play at the Hard Rock Stadium this year and would like to thank the Miami Open for putting on an amazing event. I hope to be back next year to play at this one-of-a-kind tournament in front of the incredible fans here in Miami", said Serena, who described herself as "disappointed" in taking such a decision. The 37-year-old had opened her campaign defeating Rebecca Peterson in three sets.
The American looked uncomfortable at times and she did not definitely deliver her best tennis. In Indian Wells Serena had defeated Victoria Azarenka and then retired during the second set of her third round match against Garbine Muguruza. With Williams's withdrawal, Qiang Wang reaches the fourth round and she will face Danielle Collins or Yafan Wang next. Williams's next tournament is unknown, she will probably enter to play in Madrid and Rome on clay prior to the French Open. This year Serena also competed at the Australian Open losing to Karolina Pliskova in the quarter-finals. In press conference, analyzing her win over Peterson on Friday, Serena said: "Definitely not easy at all. But I'm through it. That's that. I just got to get my game back to where I know it can be, yeah."
