Alexander Zverev: I always have a chance if I play well
Alexander Zverev praised their parents for helping him have success in tennis. Recalling how they have been supportive throughout the years, the world No. 3 said: "They knew what they were doing, they were very good coaches. And they knew to leave me alone when I needed to, without interfering too much in my personal life. It's smart from my father because if he was involved in everything, we would have gone crazy. When I was doing stupid things, he let me do them."
"My dad was a very good tennis player but he never had the chance to show it", Zverev revealed. "Simply because of the political situation in URSS back then. Politics and sports should never be related but he paid the price. He didn't have the authorization to travel, to play international competitions. He beat great players, but only in Davis Cup (18 wins in the 1980s). In a way, yes it inspired me. I knew I had the talent, the potential. The same that my father had never been able to use. But for me, I can. So why not go all out?"
For Zverev, having self-belief is the key: "I've never played a match thinking "Ok, I have little chance of winning." It was always "I'll always have a chance if I play well". I've always got that in me. Even when I was a kid and I was playing against adults. For me, I always had my chance."
