ATP Monte Carlo: Schwartzman tops Edmund. Goffin, Munar and Fognini advance
World no. 24 Diego Schwartzman is through to the second round in Monte Carlo after a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over the 17th seed Kyle Edmund in two hours and one minute. Leading 6-4, 3-0, the Briton lost the ground completely and had 12 of the last 13 games to Diego for another early exit in what has been a mediocre season so far. Serving at 52%, Kyle dropped half of the points behind the initial shot and played against 16 break points, suffering seven breaks and hitting 20 winners and 50 unforced errors to push Schwartzman through. Edmund secured the opening set with a break in game ten and grabbed 13 of the first 17 points in set number two for a huge lead and three games away from the finish line.
Out of sudden, Diego found the range and he never looked back, rattling off six straight games to take the second set 6-3, carrying that momentum into a decider where he broke Kyle twice, moving over the top with a service winner in game seven to set the second-round meeting with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Taylor Fritz. Radu Albot toppled a qualifier Aljaz Bedene 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 23 minutes, losing 14 points in nine service games and clinching four breaks to race towards the finish line for the fifth Masters 1000 win. Martin Klizan prevailed against Federico Delbonis 7-6, 7-5 in an hour and 53 minutes, trailing 5-3 in the opening set and 4-1 in the second before finding his best shots to overpower the Argentinian in the closing stages and move into the next round.
The 16th seed David Goffin ousted a qualifier Guido Andreozzi 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 25 minutes, saving five out of six break points and delivering four breaks to control the scoreboard and score only the seventh triumph in 2019. In the battle of the players who received a wild card, Jaume Munar bested Lucas Catarina 6-0, 6-3 in 62 minutes for the second Masters 1000 win and already the 13th on the Tour this year. Jaume lost his serve once against the player ranked outside the top-500 but that was his only weak moment of the match, winning 60% of the points on the return and securing six breaks from seven chances to control the scoreboard and march towards the finish line and an easy triumph.
The 13th seed Fabio Fognini was 6-4, 4-1 down against a qualifier Andrey Rublev, facing five more break points in game six before coming from the verge of defeat to steal the second set and prevail in the decider for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory, only the fifth in 2019.
