Coach Gunter Bresnik praises Dominic Thiem, speaks highly of Rafael Nadal
Coach Gunter Bresnik was happy with the way his pupil Dominic Thiem performed at the Indian Wells Masters.
Thiem, ranked at No. 5 in the world, surprised Swiss Roger Federer in the Indian Wells final to win his maiden Masters 1000 title.
Bresnik wasn't in Indian Wells as Thiem was accompanied by his new coach Nicolas Massive.
Despite the Indian Wells success, Bresnik believes that Thiem played his best tennis at the end of the last season.
The Austrian fell just short of reaching his maiden US Open semi-final as he was edged out by Spain's Rafael Nadal in an epic quarter-final clash 0-6 6-4 7-5 6-7 (4) 7-6 (5).
However, a disappointing US Open exit didn't affect Thiem as the 25-year-old won it all in his following tournament at the St. Petersburg Open.
Bresnik believes that Thiem is ready to achieve more things this season as he sees the improvement and growth in the Austrian's game.
Bresnik has also spoken highly of one of Thiem's biggest rivals, Nadal.
Nadal prevented Thiem from winning his maiden Grand Slam as he handed the Austrian a straight-set defeat in last year's French Open.
Thiem is widely considered the second best clay player, right behind Nadal.
11-time French Open champion Nadal has suffered only two losses on clay in the last two season, with both of those losses coming against Thiem at the Rome Masters in 2017 and Madrid Masters last year respectively.
