Elina Svitolina: Between regularity and the last step

Elina Svitolina ended her 2018 season in the right way. The surprising victory at the WTA Finals 2018 was a prelude to a springboard for the definitive qualitative leap that everyone expected from for 2019. The year started in a very positive way for her, even though Svitolina was not able to reach even a final, but she has come close to reaching a final and winning a title. 

After the second round in Brisbane, where she was eliminated by Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Svitolina reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, losing to the eventual champion Naomi Osaka. She then made semi-final in Doha, Dubai and Indian Wells, where she lost respectively against Simona Halep, Belinda Bencic and Bianca Andreescu. At the Miami Open she left the scene in the second round against Yafan Wang.

The energy wasted during the previous months did not allow her to play at the top of her physical condition, in Florida. But now, as the clay season approaches, she will be able to come back to play on what is, perhaps, the surface on which she plays her best tennis.

Regularity and solidity are the greatest skills of her tennis. What it is still missing is the last, decisive step, especially in the Slams. But it will come soon. Surely, for the 25-year-old, 2019 will be a season full of exciting and important moments, both on and off the court.
