Expert explains reason behind Novak Djokovic's poor level
In an interview to Sky Sport the pundit Filippo Volandri commented on the Novak Djokovic's three-set loss to Daniil Medvedev. The Italian said: "It's very windy so you have to cope with it. A lot of upsets are coming. Medvedev seemed to be unplayable this week, all his sets ended 6-1 6-2 and he was in a great form. But Djokovic keeps struggling, he seemed to get back physically in the second set but he dropped again especially mentally on the third set. He seems too nervous than he usually was. This loss will not prejudice the French Open, it's still very far away, he still has time to get there in perfect shape and he is also coming from a physical block so he may feel tired. He can play many more matches and players like him eye Grand Slams, although this one was a Masters 1000 event."
On Lorenzo Sonego's loss to Dusan Lajovic, Volandri added: "It's a physical letdown. I did not see him brilliant. Lorenzo is playing almost every day since a month, he was competing in his fourth consecutive tournament and he had travelled by night to go to Monte Carlo and slept for two hours. I told him to take a break, a rest, he was supposed to play next week but he will not, then you go to practice and compete again. Although he said he does not need to rest! That's the beauty of tennis, you will not stop. He worked on all the technical aspects, his serve technique, his forehand, we cared about details and we teached him to handle his private and professional life. He works with two physical trainers and he is trying to be as professional as possible. So that's where he improved. On Friday next week he will play the Munich quality, then Madrid qualies and the Rome Open. It's good to speak of him on those terms but we should be calm because expectations were overtaken."
