I was the cheapest coach on Tour for Rafael Nadal, says uncle Toni
In an interview to El Hormiguero, Toni Nadal revealed the three keys of his success with his nephew Rafael. Toni was the first who made the 17-time Grand Slam winner hold a racket at three years of age. "The first one is that I am Rafael's uncle. The second, that I had a luck to have a great player next to me. And the third is that I was the cheapest coach on the Tour. The worst is that now that I left he plays much better", said Toni laughing. He never took money for being Nadal's coach.
Then he also gave some suggestion to politicians: "I do not understand that if you value Rafael's character, you do not behave the same. Imagine that Murray spoke bad about Federer, about Djokovic... The tour would be broken. Some ethics should be there."
On the run for the No. 1 ranking position, Toni concluded: "He definitely did not play well because he lost in Miami and Indian Wells, which is unusual but he is the best ranked. The number one will be more open. There is him, Rafael, Alexander Zverev, Roger Federer and some young guys. Number one is the one who plays better throughout the year, with less issues, less injuries. The one who is in conditions to fight at the top for most of the time is number one."
Toni is the head director of the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor. Last year he was for a couple of days at the Barcelona Open and he also headed into the practice court with Rafa, we may see that again in a few weeks.
