I was very exigent with Rafael Nadal, says uncle Toni

In an interview Toni Nadal reflected on how his relationship with Rafael changed. Toni split with his nephew in the end of 2017 because he felt that his impact on Rafael was getting less and less. "My work has always been about being very exigent, but sometimes about self-responsibility too. To a 15-year-old Nadal, I tell what he has to do because I have to mark a working plan, but as he grows he is mature enough to know what he needs to do", said Toni.

On his own character, the 58-year-old added: "I try to be sociable because I like to joke and we as Spaniards have the advantage to be more open than most of the countries in Europe. The key is that in tennis you have a net that splits the players. Here you have no physical contact and you consequently avoid a lot of problems."

Asked if Spain and Catalunya should be together, Toni replied: "I personally feel that Catalunya is a part of Spain. I feel very Mallorcan and Balearic, but much Spanish too. We share a common history and I do not understand that someone does not want it to be this way."

Did Toni ever think of joining politics? "Many years ago, in Manacor, a friend of mine led a little local party. I have a problem with heading into politics, which is that I am very critical. So accepting things without being able to discuss them would be difficult."
