Magnus Norman recalls when Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka won 2014 Davis Cup
In a recent interview, Stan Wawrinka's coach Magnus Norman recalled when the Lausanne native, Roger Federer and the Switzerland team won the Davis Cup defeating France in the final. "In 2014, we often spoke of it. That was the priority. When we built a plan, we first put the Davis Cup then we put the other things. In Lille, the environment was unbelievable, stronger than the one I had previously lived. Wawrinka played unbelievably well. And I do not deny that I would dream a fifth rubber between me and Gael Monfils. We were warming up in the morning and I can guarantee you that I had never seen in life Stan hit the ball so well and hard the ball. His motivation was extreme. A decisive match against Gael would have been monster", Norman said.
On Wawrinka's 2014 Australian Open success, Norman concluded: "For me it was enormous. Really. I also felt that living it as a coach was tougher because when you do this job the player puts all his hopes and dreams in his hands. It's a big responsibility. When he loses, he does not feel well. When you win, it's a different feeling. And Melbourne, the feeling was unbelievable. For me who was an eternal No. 2, three-time French Open finalist including two with Robin Soderling, it was an even bigger peak."
Asked if his relationship with Wawrinka goes beyond the work, Norman concluded: "We spend a lot of time together because that's the life of a tennis coach and his player, but we always kept each other certain respect for our roles. I am his coach, he is my player. Stop."
