Rafael Nadal helped me grow, says David Ferrer
In an interview to Sport.es, David Ferrer commented about Rafael Nadal's influence on him. "I think Nadal helped me. It was a luck to coincide with him. I do not know until what point without coinciding with Rafa I would have been a good player. His ambition helped me to grow and not make mistakes. To be very exigent with me. Seeing him, that ambition and that way to compete makes you excited."
On not being able to win the Barcelona Open, Ferrer added: "That makes me a bit sad, not having won here in Barcelona because at 10 years of age I was coming here with my parents and with all the career I had and the titles I won I did not catch Barcelona where I lost four finals. That's a shame. The four times were against Rafa but some other times Rafa has not played and I reached the semifinals and I lost to Pablo Andujar, Kei Nishikori... But in life, not everything can become true. This year I come here to compete. That's my goal. If I came to give my farewell I would have not played tennis, that's not my way to do things. I played all the tournaments to be competitive and I was and I feel happy about that. I defeated a top 3 player in the world in the last year of my career and only for that ending this year was worth. Hopefully, I can keep doing it, I will try and on this aspect, I am calm with how it goes. I feel well, with strength and I will enjoy every point I play and every moment that I will be living because I know it will not happen again."
