Maria Sharapova should have smaller schedule like Roger Federer: Tarpischev
Russian Tennis Federation chief Shamil Tarpischev believes that Maria Sharapova should take inspiration from Roger Federer by playing only the most important tournaments. The five-time Grand Slam winner has committed herself to three clay-court tournaments prior to the French Open, and in her career, she has withdrawn from events a ton of times due to injuries. Sharapova last played an official match in St. Petersburg in late January. “It is disturbing that she has a lot of injuries. Not only her shoulder, but also leg and hip. She probably needs to play smaller (calendar). I suppose, like Federer. It is necessary to reduce the load and prepare for a number of important tournaments – the Grand Slams and the Premier tournaments, in particular. The training regime should be reviewed," said Tarpischev.
Tarpischev hopes Sharapova will play the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. As of now, her participation is in doubt as she has not played the three Fed Cup ties required by the Olympic rules so far. “If we do not include Sharapova in the team, this does not mean that she will not get to the Olympic Games. Here we, if need be, will write (to the ITF) that we did not take her to the team, because she was injured. It’ll be enough. She generally wanted to play and win gold there. We have repeatedly talked about this. Things can change only if she ends her career due to injuries. But I hope this does not come to that," Tarpischev concluded.
