Ncolas Almagro to Head Tennis Academy in Murcia Post Retirement
Tennis - Former Top 10 player Nicolas Almagro, who announced his retirement earlier this week, will be the new head of the tennis academy "La Manga Club" in his native town of Murcia, according to German website Tennisnet. The club offers training to 28 students and Almagro will use his experience from the professional circuit for the betterment of the academy, which was founded in 1972.
Almagro commented, "This is an excellent way to stay in touch with the world of tennis - in this case, management and training - for every professional tennis player La Manga Club is a dream - not only because of the quality of its facilities and staff but also because of the history of the Department."
Almagro peaked at No. 9 in the rankings in 2011 and reached the quarter-finals at the French Open on three occasions and the Australian Open on one occasion. He was also part of the Spanish team that won the Davis Cup in 2008. He had struggled in recent years with injury and played only five tournaments in 2018, going 0-5. Murcia was the only tournament he had entered in 2019.
Lorenzo MartÃnez, who currently heads the tennis programme at the "La Manga Club", is looking forward to working with Almagro: "We are very proud to welcome a pro like Nico and we are confident that we will work together with him His experience and technical knowledge will make him a great team."
The La Manga Club is considered to be one of the finest outdoor facilities in Spain and has hosted several prestigious events such as the Davis Cup, Fed Cup and ATP tournaments.
